Andrew Gemmell, Matthew Hirschberger, Katie Ledecky and Lane Stone were named PVS Outstanding Distance Athletes for the 2015-2016 season. This award is given to the top PVS female in the 1000 yard freestyle and 800 meter freestyle, as well as the top PVS male in the 1650 yard freestyle and 1500 meter freestyle during the period from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016. PVS also awards the top 18&under swimmer in any of the 4 events in which the winner is older than 18.
Gemmell and Ledecky swept the open awards. Gemmell posted the top times in PVS in both the 1500 meter free (15:14.18 at the 2016 Arena Pro Swim Series at Austin) and the 1650 yard free (15:02.88 at the 2015 NCAP Invitational). Ledecky also posted her top yards time (8:59.65) at the 2015 NCAP Invite. Her 800 meter swim (8:04.79) came at the 2016 Olympic Games. Both of Ledecky’s swims were American Records and her 800 was a World Record as well.
Hirschberger and Stone won awards in the 18&under category. Hirschberger swam the fastest time of any 18&under PVS male in the 1500 meter freestyle. His time of 15:28.37 was swum at the 2016 NCSA Summer Championships. Stone posted the fastest 18&under time in PVS when he went 15:18.56 at the 2015 NCAP Invitational.
